Imagine the sun scorching the earth, cracks splitting the soil and its cracks snaking into the earth deep down an acrid abyss of nothingness. Wells dry up, faucets cough out dust, and the people look towards the sky, waiting for relief that may never come. The body weakens, the mind fogs, and every thought fixates on the unattainable: a sip of water. But this is not a test of endurance, not a single day's fast. It is a future unravelling before us, one where relief never comes. This is Pakistan's impending reality if we do not act today.
Pakistan is facing a severe water crisis as its freshwater reserves dwindle. The country has already fallen below the international threshold for water scarcity (1,000 cubic meters per person annually) (PCRWR, 2016). Alarming forecasts have warned that if current trends continue, Pakistan could effectively run out of sufficient fresh water by 2025 (UNDP, 2018). In 2016, the Pakistan Council of Research in Water Resources (PCRWR) cautioned that the nation had crossed the "water scarcity" line in 2005 and would approach "absolute scarcity" by 2025 (The Express Tribune, 2016). Now at that juncture, Pakistan is grappling with chronic water stress, evidenced by per-capita availability plummeting from about 5,000 cubic meters in the 1950s to near 1,000 today (World Bank, 2021). The crisis isn't just future speculation; over 80% of Pakistan's population already faces severe water scarcity for at least one month each year (IMF, 2019). Such conditions pose a dire threat to agriculture, cities, and the country's stability if immediate action is not taken.
Multiple indicators show Pakistan's freshwater depletion reaching critical levels. The Indus River system, Pakistan's main water source, is under immense strain from overuse and upstream pressures (PIDE, 2022). Total renewable water resources have remained roughly static for decades, even as demand soars. As a result, per-capita water availability has steadily declined and is now at the verge of the scarcity threshold. In fact, Pakistan has already moved from being "water stressed" to "water scarce," meaning each Pakistani has, on average, less water annually than what would fill half of an Olympic swimming pool (WWF, 2020). Recent projections have sounded the alarm. In 2018, PCRWR warned that Pakistan could face a "drought-like situation" by 2025 if no corrective measures are taken (The Express Tribune, 2016). The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and UN agencies have echoed concerns, noting that population growth has outpaced water supply and aging infrastructure is exacerbating shortages (UNDP, 2019). The Pakistan Institute of Development Economics projects that if the status quo persists, the entire country may slip into absolute water scarcity by 2025 (PIDE, 2022). While 2025 is now upon us, these warnings underscore the severity of Pakistan's water challenge, one that is manifesting in dry reservoirs, falling groundwater, and unreliable supply. Pakistan's water storage capacity is only about a 30-day supply, woefully low compared to the 1,000-day capacity recommended for countries with similar climates (World Bank, 2021). This means the country has little buffer against droughts. Already, Pakistan ranks among the top 17 countries facing "extremely high" water stress (WWF, 2020). Without urgent intervention, the gap between water demand and supply will continue to widen, threatening Pakistan's food security and economic development in the near future.
Several interrelated factors are driving Pakistan's water crisis. Experts stress that it's not one root cause, but a combination of demand-side pressures, inefficient usage, and governance failures that push Pakistan towards water scarcity.
Water scarcity is not just an environmental crisis; it is an economic death spiral. The agriculture sector, consuming 90% of Pakistan's water supply, suffers from wasteful irrigation practices. Without policy reforms, crop yields will plummet, food inflation will skyrocket, and Pakistan's GDP will face a catastrophic hit. Global reports estimate that Pakistan's water mismanagement could shave off 4-6% of its annual economic growth. Yet, instead of investing in conservation and technology, governments cycle through short-term crisis management. The cost of inaction is not just in lost resources; it is in a nation's economic downfall.
While Pakistan teeters on the edge of a water catastrophe, other nations have implemented proactive measures. Australia, once faced with dwindling freshwater supplies, adopted a national strategy of wastewater recycling, desalination, and behavioural changes. Singapore, despite having almost no freshwater sources, created a multi-layered water strategy, including desalination, rainwater harvesting, and high-tech water purification. Pakistan, with an abundance of natural water sources, paradoxically struggles due to inefficient management and a lack of urgency.
Pakistan must embrace a water-secure future through technology. Advanced drip irrigation, AI-driven water monitoring, and desalination plants must be prioritized over politically driven megaprojects. The technology exists; drought-prone regions in the Middle East already use AI to track and optimize water consumption. Without digital water governance, Pakistan will remain in an outdated cycle of mismanagement and emergency measures.
The Pakistani people need to wake up to the reality of this crisis before it is too late. In the blessed month of Ramadan, people fast from dawn to dusk, experiencing thirst and hunger for a limited time, knowing that relief will come at sunset. But imagine a scenario where that relief never arrives; where water is not available even after the fast is over. This is the looming reality if collective action is not taken now. The nation must understand that this crisis is not just the government's responsibility; every individual must contribute by conserving water, adopting efficient usage practices, and raising awareness within their communities. It is time to act; not tomorrow, not in the future, but today.
